The Long Island Waves - building a tradition of girls ice hockey on the Island
The Waves have a long tradition of developing female atheletes in the field of ice hockey on long Island. For many years we have competed with teams across the tri-state area and mid atlantic states at the tier 2 level in the GAL league. In 2008, in a move to unify girls hockey on Long Island the Waves partnered with long time rivals Suffolk PAL and the NHL New York Islanders to form a cooperation that will enable the clubs to move up and play at Tier 1, the highest level of girls hockey in the USA. This expands the horizon for the club, who is now establishing a development and coaching program that will develop girls to compete at the college level, without having to leave home for prep schools as in the past.
The Waves have therefore joined the inaugural Junior Women's Hockey League Red Division for 16U teams in 2008-9. In addition the club will now compete at the upper level divisions at the top tournaments in the US including Rochester Fire on Ice and the Polar Bear Holiday events.
Our brief history:
2007-08 16U
Congratulations to the Waves 16U for winning the 16U Tier 2 State Tournament. They travelled to Ogdensburg and won all 6 games against stiff competition. They beat Ithaca 1-0 to finalize a tremendous season. The girls also won championships in the two leagues that they competed in during the year. In both the MAWHA and GAL leagues, the team went undefeated and swept through the playoffs. For many of the girls, this is their third NYS title in the past four years. The Waves are very proud of the girls and they will always be able to say that they were NYS Champions.
